Most foreign nationals need a permit to work in Canada, but not all. A defined list of jobs (some performers, news reporters, public speakers, certain business visitors and others) can be done without one. Being allowed to work without a permit is not the same as being allowed to enter.

Why it's required: Working without authorization puts your status at risk and can bar future applications. Checking first costs nothing.
